Methodology and source

This tracker collates the most recent published pub closure statistics from two named industry sources. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) publishes counts of pubs that close for good, most recently reporting 161 closures across England, Scotland and Wales in the first quarter of 2026 (published 5 May 2026), against 128 in the same period of 2025, and earlier reporting 289 closures in England and Wales during 2024 (published 17 February 2025). The Hospitality Market Monitor from CGA by NIQ with AlixPartners counts all licensed premises in Great Britain, recording 98,609 sites at the end of March 2026, down 305 in the quarter. The two series measure different things (pubs closing for good versus net licensed-site numbers), so we label the scope and date of every figure and do not mix them into a single total. Scope varies between releases (England and Wales versus Great Britain), so compare like with like. Figures are the most recent published at the last review (14 July 2026). Hospitality is one of the most insolvency-exposed UK sectors: see our hospitality insolvency and rescue guide and the UK company insolvency tracker for the formal-insolvency backdrop.
