A petition starts a court case. It does not close the company. The company can still pay, settle or ask the court to dismiss the petition. If the court makes a winding-up order, a liquidator takes over and creditors claim from them.

How to check if a petition has been filed against a company
Search The Gazette insolvency notices for the company name or number, or use our petition lookup tool, which searches the same notices. Each search can only show a petition that has been advertised. Unless the court directs otherwise, the petitioner must advertise the petition in The Gazette, but where the company is not the petitioner the notice appears "not less than seven business days after service of the petition on the company" (Insolvency (England and Wales) Rules 2016, rule 7.10, checked 1 November 2026). So a petition served in the last week or so will not show up yet, and a search that finds nothing does not prove there is no petition.
Companies House is not where petitions are advertised. The company's Companies House record shows later steps once they are filed, such as a liquidator's notice of appointment in a voluntary liquidation (Insolvency Act 1986, section 109).
